Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Prepares, dispenses and delivers medications and pharmaceuticals prescribed by physicians. Advises patients, families, physicians and other healthcare professionals on various medication-related matters.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.




  • Prepares and dispenses medication orders per physician request according to established profiles, procedures, and protocols.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication management for patients according to established policies, regulations, standards, procedures and protocols.
  • Provides information to patients and their families about medications and their use.
  • Advises physicians and other health care professionals on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications.
  • Monitors the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy to ensure safe and effective use of medication; recommends alternative drug therapy as appropriate.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining inventory assuring that stock is maintained at proper levels and in accordance with manufacturer requirements, prepares related documentation.
  • Ensures secure storage of narcotics and other controlled substances.
  • Assists in maintaining the Omnicell and Meditech computer systems as it relates to the Pharmacy function.
  • Provides training and guidance to Pharmacy Technicians; oversees the accuracy of prescriptions filled.
  • Prepares departmental documents and reports as required.
  • Works cooperatively with other departments on a variety of interdepartmental matters.
  • Transports prescription medications and other healthcare supplies to patient care areas.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.




Job Requirements



General Requirements * Valid State of Michigan Pharmacist Registration * Valid State of Michigan Controlled Substance License
Work Experience * Previous pharmacist experience preferred
Education * Master's degree in Pharmacy
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * General knowledge of pharmacy terms * Knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties * Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of services including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates * Written and computer skills necessary to maintain various departmental records, documents and reports * Mathematical/computation skills necessary for pharmacokinetics calculations * Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate, orally and in written form, with patients, families, physicians and other health care professional in the exchange of information * Skills necessary to provide guidance, training, prioritize and review the work of assigned staff. * Analytical ability to assess patient data and recommend alternative drug therapy when appropriate * Mental ability to work on tasks requiring accuracy and attention to detail, and adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands * Physical ability to stand/sit in one position for extended periods of time, lift/move items weighing up to 50 pounds, and retrieve items from high shelves * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
