Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Performs transcription services for Surgical Pathology. Provides and performs a variety of secretarial and clerical services as needed.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.



  • Listen to audio recorded dictation of pathology reports and accurately transcribe the dictation into typed reports;
  • Review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software, insure that the transcription is correct, complete, and has a consistent style;
  • Translate medical abbreviations and jargon into the appropriate long form;
  • Identify inconsistencies, errors, and missing information within a report that could compromise patient care and communicate directly with the healthcare provider to ensure the accuracy of the reports;
  • Enter and retrieve medical reports from electronic health records systems;
  • Perform quality audits and participate in peer review;
  • Use Excel spreadsheets to record data;
  • Scan reports into a Health Information Management system;
  • Track and file pathology materials including slides and blocks;
  • Perform clerical duties as needed.




Job Requirements

Work Experience * One year of secretarial or office experience * Medical Transcription experience. Preferred.
Education * High School Diploma * Completion of Medical Terminology course
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Type a minimum of 50 words per minute * Proper usage of spelling, grammar, and punctuation * Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills * Ability to operate a desktop and/or laptop computer * Word processing experience * Type 70 words per minute. Preferred. * Familiarity with Word, Excel, and Power Point. Preferred.
